Mrs. Virginia “Jo” Ruthell Young Flood, age 87, of Chatsworth, passed away on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
To everyone who knew Maw Flood, she was Mom, Maw Flood, or Mamaw. She was a dear friend to many. Her home was always a place where the doors were open and there was always something to eat. She never wanted anyone to leave hungry, and caring for others was simply part of who she was.
She spent much of her life serving and helping others. From delivering newspapers and babysitting to ironing clothes and doing whatever she could for the people around her, she found joy in being needed. Her list of friends and acquaintances was long because she had a way of making people feel welcomed and loved. Her kindness knew few limits, and her home was a safe place.
Maw Flood shared 59 years of marriage with her husband, J.E. “Jack” Flood. One of the things Maw and Pop enjoyed was simply being together. They spent their time riding the roads looking for deer and other wildlife, listening to bluegrass and gospel music, and attending bluegrass festivals. They loved the simple pleasures of life—being outdoors, being together, making memories, and taking their weekly ride to Carters Lake to make sure the water was still there.
Above all else, her greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Onice and Mabel Young; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carl and Tammer Flood; her son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Bertha Flood; her daughter, Gail Johnson; her granddaughter, Christy Flood; her great-grandson, Brayden Flood; her sister-in-law, Ann Young; her sister, Geneva West; and her brother, Dean Young.
Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Keith and Denise Flood, Doug Flood, and Steve Flood; her daughter and sons-in-law, Vadah and Shane Mullinax, and Ernest Johnson; her 15 grandchildren; her 13 great-grandchildren; her brothers and sister-in-law, Josh Young, and Wayne and Trixie Young; her sister, Shirley Townsend; her brother-in-law, Paul Flood; several nieces and nephews; and her special friend and caregiver, Crystal Jones.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Amedisys Hospice of Dalton, GA, for their excellent care of Maw Flood.
