Linda Burton Stainton, age 81, of Chatsworth, Georgia, passed away on October 8, 2026, surrounded by her loving family, who sent her home singing “Amazing Grace.”
Born on June 21, 1945, in Cleveland, Mississippi, in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, Linda’s roots ran deep in Mississippi. The Delta shaped her love of family, faith, and tradition, and though life eventually brought her to Georgia, she remained deeply connected to her Mississippi heritage.
Linda grew up in Cleveland, Mississippi, and graduated from Cleveland High School in 1963. Linda’s life’s work was her family. As the beloved matriarch of the Stainton family, she devoted herself to nurturing, encouraging, and keeping her family close. Known affectionately as “Grandmama” by most, she lived by the motto, “families are forever,” and her life was a testament to that belief.
She was a member of Holly Creek Baptist Church and treasured the fellowship of her church family. She also enjoyed playing canasta with her Monday Canasta Club, a close-knit group that has been playing together for 15 years and was affectionately and jokingly known as the “Cheaters.”
Linda was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Edwin “Eddie” LaFayette Stainton Jr., who passed away just six short months ago. Her family takes comfort in knowing they are together again in Heaven. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Hugh Franklin Burton and Doris Marie Burton; her sisters, Jeanie Peeples and Sherry Carver; her brothers, Ed Burton and William “Buddy” LaFayette Burton; and her son-in-law, Nathan Gaddy.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children and their spouses, Shane and Kim Stainton of Chatsworth, Georgia; Chad and Tammy Stainton of Savannah, Georgia; Sebre Gaddy of Rocky Face, Georgia; and Salter and Sabrina Stainton of Chatsworth, Georgia; her grandchildren, Cody and Taylor Stainton, Seth and Kelsey Stainton, Kendal and Alec Robbins, Jonathon and Jordan Olinger, Amelia Stainton, Kati Moore, Tori and Bryce Middlebrooks, Ali and Colton Lane, Brady Stainton, Laska and Erin Gaddy, Austin and Brooklyn Stainton, Hallie and Chris Wheeler, and Irelynd Stainton; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sisters and brother-in-law, Barbara Kendall of Chatsworth, Georgia, and Donna and Billy Moore of Buffalo, Missouri.
She also leaves behind her treasured best friends, Noma and Bet Welch, with whom she shared 59 years of friendship, as well as her beloved nieces and nephews, extended family, church family, and dear friends.
The family extends a special thank you to Rev. Scott Linginfelter for his presence, compassion, prayers, and spiritual support throughout this difficult time, as well as to Linda’s neighbors in the Timberbrook subdivision, who looked out for her, cared for her, and treated her like family.
The family will receive friends on October 10, 2026, from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM at Peeples Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM in the chapel of Peeples Funeral Home, with Rev. Scott Linginfelter officiating. Interment will follow at Serenity Hills Memorial Park.
