Helen Hinson
Harmon
May 13, 1934 — Dec 16, 2023
Chatsworth
It is with great sadness that the Harmon Family announces the death of our dear Mother, Helen Hinson Harmon (89), who died peacefully on Saturday December 16, 2023 in her beloved State of Georgia with family by her side. This dynamic woman lived her life to the glory of God, with a full commitment to her devoted husband Jack and all four of her children. She served her community in countless ways and was always vigilant in prayer over all matters pertaining to family, friends and her country.
Raised in the West End of Atlanta, by parents John B. and Louise A. Hinson and grandparents John James and Amanda Carolyn Hinson, she flourished as a student of nursing at Crawford Long Hospital after graduating Brown High School in 1952. During her nursing stint, Helen fell in love with John (Jack) Shannon Harmon of Dill Avenue in the Capital View area of Atlanta and at 20 years old, was married to this kind hearted soul, a marriage that lasted 61 years until her precious husband succumbed to Alzheimer's in 2015. During their 40 years in Atlanta, years filled with faith, family and church service, they were members of the Indian Creek Baptist Church Decatur, First Baptist Church of Atlanta, Roswell Street Baptist and Johnson Creek Baptist in Roswell. After their retirement in 1999, Helen and Jack retired to Sautee-Nacoochee and the lovely Sky Lake Community. For them it was heaven on earth, a place they always wanted to live. God richly blessed this union and with Helen's passing on Saturday, they are blissfully reunited once again for eternity.
Helen was a devoted intercessor of prayer, a woman who loved to read, a passionate cook, a massive sports fan (The Indy 500, The Little League World Series, the PGA Tour, Georgia Tech Football and Atlanta Braves Baseball were her main loves), loved painting, needlepoint, and music, but her truest love was reserved for her family. She was always at the center of organizing family affairs, active in social affairs throughout her life, PTA Meetings, charitable fund raisers, cooking for the ill or grieving, all the while working as a Secretary for the Dekalb County School System, and later, secretarial duties at both the Wieuca Baptist Church, Atlanta, and lastly, at the 2nd Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, Atlanta. She was an inspiration to all her family and remained so to her dying day, a fighter to the end. Her family adored her!
Mrs. Harmon has been preceded in death by her aforementioned parents and grandparents, husband, Jack Shannon Harmon, her daughter, Cathy Lyn Harmon, and her grandson, Steven Russell Bennett. Surviving Mrs. Harmon is her brother, James Milton Hinson and his wife, Marilyn Clonts Hinson of Sautee-Nachooche, GA; their daughter, Meredith Hinson Bradham and her husband, Joseph W. Bradham. Mrs. Harmon's direct family includes son, Michael Shannon Harmon of Beech Mountain, NC, his wife, Lynda Camp Harmon and their daughter, Joanna Michelle; daughter, Julie Harmon Thomas of Chatsworth, GA, her husband, Jeremy Kyle Thomas, their son, Michael Brian Bennett, and daughter, Sarah Elise Thomas; daughter, Becky Harmon Womack of Simpsonville, SC, her husband, Robert Daniel Womack, and their sons, Mathew Adam Womack and Andrew Judson Womack; Cathy's widower, Blair Elliot Nolen and their son, Jack Elliot Nolen; and many, great-grandchildren.
