Listen to Obituary

David Montgomery Gordon, 74, passed away on September 26, 2026.

David was born on September 6, 1952, to Kenneth Gordon and Helen Dobson. He devoted his life to his family, his community, and to serving others. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend whose life was marked by dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to those around him.

David began his career in law enforcement in 1973, beginning what would become more than three decades of service to the communities of North Georgia. Throughout his career, he served with the Dalton Police Department, Chatsworth Police Department, Murray County Sheriff's Office, Whitfield County Sheriff's Office, and the State Fire Marshal's Office.

David later joined the Georgia State Patrol, where he continued his distinguished career and ultimately retired in 2009 as the Chief Polygraph Examiner (GSP 072). During his more than 30 years in law enforcement, David dedicated himself to protecting and serving others. He was respected for his knowledge, professionalism, dedication, and commitment to doing his work with honesty and integrity.

While his professional accomplishments were significant, David's greatest legacy was his family. To those who knew him, he was much more than the uniform he wore or the career he devoted himself to. He was a husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend who took great pride in the people he loved. The memories he created with his family and the lives he touched throughout his years of service will remain a lasting part of his legacy.

David is survived by his wife, Becky Butler Gordon; his son, James “Jim” Gordon, and daughter-in-law, Keisha Gordon; his beloved granddaughters, Olivia and Ella Gordon; his nieces and nephew, Cindy Cordero, Veronica Howell, Cyrena Raeder, Matt Byrne, Erica Carnes, Jonathan Gordon, Brad Butler, Bonnie Sluder, Amanda Souther, Anita Withrow, and Andy Middleton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth Gordon and Helen Dobson; his stepfather, Fred Dobson; and his three brothers, Kenneth Ronald Gordon, Michael Eric Gordon, and Donald Terry Gordon.

David will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former colleagues, and the many people whose lives he touched throughout his years of service.

His career may have ended with his retirement from the Georgia State Patrol in 2009, but his lifetime of service and the love he gave to his family will not be forgotten. His legacy will live on through the family he loved, the people he served, and the memories he leaves behind.

A memorial service to honor the life of David Montgomery Gordon will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 1:00 pm in the chapel of Peeples Funeral Home with Rev. Andrew Bowen officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Guthy Jackson Research Foundation.
